Universal Genève Polerouter Ref. 20217
Few vintage watches embody the spirit of 1950s innovation quite like the Universal Genève Polerouter. Introduced in 1954 to celebrate Scandinavian Airlines System’s (SAS) pioneering commercial flights across the North Pole, the Polerouter was created during a remarkable period when aviation was redefining the limits of international travel. Flying over the Arctic exposed aircraft—and the watches worn by their crews—to unusually strong magnetic fields, demanding a timepiece capable of maintaining reliable precision under challenging conditions.
To mark this milestone, Universal Genève commissioned a young Gérald Genta to design what would become one of the most enduringly elegant wristwatches of the twentieth century. Long before creating icons such as the Royal Oak and Nautilus, Genta conceived the Polerouter with its distinctive twisted lugs, refined crosshair dial, and beautifully balanced proportions. More than seventy years later, the design remains as fresh and sophisticated as ever.
This Ref. 20217 is powered by the renowned Universal Genève Caliber 138SS bumper automatic movement, an important chapter in the evolution of automatic watchmaking. Unlike modern self-winding movements with a freely rotating rotor, the bumper mechanism oscillates between two springs, creating the subtle tactile sensation that gave these movements their nickname. It is a charming reminder of the ingenuity and craftsmanship that defined early automatic watches.
Produced before Universal Genève introduced its revolutionary micro-rotor calibers, bumper-powered Polerouters occupy a special place in the brand’s history. They bridge the gap between traditional watchmaking and the technical innovations that would establish Universal Genève as one of the most respected manufactures of the era.
Today, the Polerouter is widely regarded as one of the defining dress-sport watches of the 1950s. Combining exceptional design, historical significance, and outstanding mechanical quality, the Universal Genève Polerouter Ref. 20217 remains a highly desirable piece for collectors who appreciate understated elegance and one of the finest stories in vintage horology.
