Universal Genève Polerouter Date Ref. 104601-5 — Clous de Paris
Some vintage watches are simply beautiful. Others tell a story. The Universal Genève Polerouter belongs firmly to the latter category.
This exceptional Polerouter Date ref. 104601-5 combines one of Universal Genève’s most important designs with Gérald Genta’s early genius, pioneering micro-rotor technology, and an exceptionally elegant gold guilloché dial with a distinctive Clous de Paris pattern.

Born from the golden age of aviation
The story of the Polerouter begins in 1954, when Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) inaugurated a pioneering commercial route over the North Pole between Scandinavia and North America.
Flying across the Arctic presented unique navigational challenges, particularly because of the Earth’s magnetic field. Universal Genève was commissioned by SAS to create a watch commemorating this achievement, and the design was entrusted to a remarkably young Gérald Genta, then just 23 years old.

Genta created a watch that was both elegant and technically distinctive. The sculpted lugs, characteristic case and layered dial construction became defining elements of the Polerouter — one of the earliest important designs of Genta’s illustrious career.

The revolutionary micro-rotor
Beneath the dial lies another remarkable part of the story.
The earliest Polerouters used a bumper-style automatic movement, but Universal Genève soon developed a more sophisticated solution. In 1955, the company introduced calibre 215, one of the pioneering commercially produced micro-rotor movements.

Unlike a conventional automatic movement, where the rotor sits on top of the movement, a micro-rotor is integrated into the movement itself. This clever construction significantly reduced the thickness of the movement while retaining automatic winding.

It allowed Universal Genève to create an exceptionally slim and elegant watch without sacrificing mechanical sophistication. The Polerouter consequently became an important chapter in the development of automatic watchmaking.

Ref. 104601-5 and its remarkable dial
The ref. 104601 belongs to the later Polerouter Date generation, featuring a date display at 3 o’clock and the continued evolution of Universal Genève’s micro-rotor technology.
What makes the 104601-5 particularly special is its beautifully executed gold guilloché dial. Specialist Polerouter references identify this configuration as a gold model with a guilloché dial, complemented by elegant dauphine hands and the characteristic Universal Genève signature.

The fine Clous de Paris-style pattern gives the dial an extraordinary sense of depth. As the watch catches the light, the geometric texture changes subtly, creating a fascinating three-dimensional effect.

It is decorative without being extravagant — refined, elegant and unmistakably characteristic of its era.

A remarkable piece of watchmaking history
The Polerouter is much more than a beautiful vintage dress watch. It represents the convergence of aviation history, Gérald Genta design and pioneering Swiss mechanical engineering.
The ref. 104601-5 adds another layer to that story with its exceptional gold guilloché dial, making it a particularly refined expression of the Polerouter concept.

Universal Genève Polerouter Date ref. 104601-5 — Gérald Genta design, pioneering micro-rotor technology and an exceptionally elegant Clous de Paris-style guilloché dial, encapsulating the spirit of one of the great eras of Swiss watchmaking.
